Brunello di Montalcino is a DOCG red wine (Controlled and Guaranteed Denomination of Origin) produced in Tuscany, in the municipality of Montalcino in the province of Siena. Brunello di Montalcino can be considered, along with Barolo, the Italian red wine with greater longevity.
Brunello is the name that was given locally in Montalcino to what was believed to be a grape variety.
In 1879 the Ampelographic Commission of the Province of Siena determined, after some years of controlled experiments, that Sangiovese and Brunello were the same grape variety.
In Montalcino the name Brunello was therefore transformed into the designation of the wine produced in purity from Sangiovese grapes.
Minimum alcoholic strength of the wine: 12.5%
Yield (grapes / hectare): 8.0 t
Established by decree of: 11/30/11
Maximum grape yield: 68%
The One day wine tour will start around 09,30 A.m.
If there is a Tuscan wine among the most famous and appreciated in the world, it is undoubtedly Brunello di Montalcino and with this tour we will get to know not only the lands that give rise to this wine but also the history of this territory. It starts from Castelnuovo dell’Abate near the splendid abbey of Sant’Antimo, whose structure dating back to the 12th century is considered one of the most beautiful examples of Romanesque-French architecture in Italy.
Will continue to climb until we reach Montalcino: a small medieval village situated on a high hill overlooking the enchanting panorama of the Val d’Orcia.
Not only famous for its wines, Montalcino also has a fascinating history that has its roots in the medieval period and of which today it is possible to admire numerous testimonies such as its mighty fortress, the Palazzo dei Priori and the numerous churches.
We will therefore not miss the opportunity to visit this beautiful village by taking a walk in the historic center among the narrow streets, the craft shops and the many wine shops, stopping maybe for a short refreshment stop (not included in the tour price) and relaxing while sipping a good glass of wine or a glass of Brunello.
After recovering the energy we will resume the way back to the starting point by pedaling through the vineyards from which the great wines of Montalcino are produced.
