I had a great time on the Chianti Wine Tour!

I love going on wine group tours, cos' you always meet interesting people who want to enjoy life and have a good time. Our tour guide, Martina, had a great sense of humor, and she really knows a lot about Chianti wine! We had a chance to taste a wide selection of wine, and by the end of the tour, most of us were a bit tipsy. On the way back to Florence, someone started to sing, and the rest of us joined in. I really had a great time on the Chianti Wine Tour!

A dream to become a wine producer

As my wife and I are hobbyist sommeliers, we love exploring different wine-producing regions. The Chianti area is special in many ways, and this tour was excellent! We were offered some delicious salami, bread, and olive oil, which paired very well with their fine wines. After we retire, we dream of becoming wine producers ourselves, so this wine tour was yet another opportunity to see how it's done!

DESCRIPTION

Chianti Wine Tour

DRIVING TO THE CHIANTI AREA

After you board the coach bus and meet your tour guide, relax and enjoy the views of Tuscany. As you sit comfortably, the tour guide will tell you about the history of this world-famous Italian region. Did you know that the name Tuscany derives from Etruscans? They were an ancient people who inhabited the region before the Romans conquered it. Etruscans also cultivated grapes and knew about the process of fermentation. The drink they made was similar to wine that we know today. As you hear interesting stories, admire the picturesque countryside dotted with medieval villages and stone churches.

ARRIVE AT A TYPICAL CHIANTI WINERY

As a part of the Chianti Wine Tour, you will visit two typical Chianti wineries. Here you will have a chance to taste some of their excellent wines and learn about the process of winemaking. You will also have an opportunity to hear about each wine you taste from the winemakers themselves. If some of them don't speak English, don't worry, as your tour guide will translate. These wineries are modern yet traditional, and offer food as well as wines. And the best part, they will let you sample it all! For example they might offer you delicious salami, home-made bread, and their exquisite olive oils. If you want you can also buy some to take back home!

SMALL GROUP TOUR OF THE VINEYARDS

Follow your tour guide for a short tour of the vineyards. At this point of the Chianti Wine Tour, the group will be divided into smaller groups so that you can have a more intimate experience. As you walk through rows of grapevines stretching down the hill, you'll see cypress and olive trees and many rustic elements that make Tuscany known around the world.

PREPARE YOUR TASTE BUDS FOR CHIANTI CLASSICO!

Chianti isn't the only wine you will encounter during the Chianti Wine Tour. You will also have a chance to taste some other varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Vernaccia, Merlot, Trebbiano, Vermentino, and Syrah. However, the star of each of the wineries you will visit is the Chianti Classico! As you will learn from the winemakers, not every Chianti is a Chianti Classico. It has to be produced in the historic Chianti area, which stretches between Florence and Siena. It also has to age for at least 12 months in an oak barrel and be made from a minimum of 80% Sangiovese grapes. Other grapes allowed are Canaiolo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot. Savor the moment and enjoy life's simple pleasures as you take part in the Chianti wine tour!

Interesting facts about the Chianti Wine Region

  • Villages of Radda, Castellina, and Gaiole formed the so-called „Lega del Chianti“ (League of Chianti) during the medieval times. It was a political but also a military alliance that administered this region on behalf of the Florentine Republic.
  • Although today we associate Chianti as being a red wine, it was initially a white wine. It was not until much later, during the second half of the 19th century, that Chianti became predominantly red.
  • As the popularity of the Chianti wine region began to spread, many other wine producers started copying and labeling their wines as Chianti. As a countermeasure, the Chianti Classico designation was created in 1932. This strict set of regulations and quality standards is enforced until the present day.
